I did it again, I must confess. But the thing is I don’t even feel bad about participating in such. Who wouldn’t, right? For to do so is delight, is pleasure, is beauty, is wonder. And, not only that, but…What? Who wouldn’t…what? Oh yeah…Who wouldn’t deny their taste buds the enjoyment of their most favorite of foods. And that is what I did tonight.
So, my confession is that I love Asian food. Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Thai and I have ever tasted Indonesian dishes. For me, there is nothing comparable to these eastern cuisines. The spices and sauces and creams dance across the palate like no other. Is your mouth watering yet? If not, check your pulse.
It isn’t so much the meat or noodles or rice or potatoes, for every culture has such staples. Rather it’s what these particular cultures are able to do with a dash of spices, a hint of chili peppers, and a dollop of coconut milk. Or maybe it’s the coriander and garlic sprinkled into a simmering rice or potato dish. Or…oh, I could go on and on and on…
And so, I sat down with my wife and friend tonight in a Thai restaurant, just outside of Brussels, Belgium, to partake of a meal. And I have another confession to make, my taste buds were not dissatisfied. Every mouthful was a successful delight. It is just a painful truth to know and realize that one’s tummy will eventually be filled and, therefore, we find ourselves having to lay down the utensils that helped bring us such contentment.
Yet, there is a consolation. Probably not tomorrow, for I don’t want to overfill myself with such a prize. But there are the days and weeks and months and years to come, such a time to once again partake of something so succulent. Maybe it will be spicy, yet not too spicy, maybe sweet, but not too much like a dessert. We will just have to so what other dishes are arranged upon the menu pages. Yet, as I ponder my experience this evening, and previous ones as well, there is no doubt that my heart is truly grateful that Asians were brought forth from the same dust as image bearers. And, you know what, though this might just be my opinion, they might just be the best image bearers there have ever been in regards to food.
Anyone have chopsticks I could borrow…
Have you found any Chinese places in the Belgium area that you would recommend?
I am sure there are some good ones. We have had take away from two places near our place in Hoeilaart. I hear there is a really nice one on the Brusselsesteenweg in Overijse. Some people went last Sunday. May we can have a group go there one Sunday in the near future.
